Is It Best to Rent a Forklift or Buy Second-Hand?

Business owners will know the dilemma well, when the time comes to consider the procurement of a forklift (or not!). There are a hefty load of pros and cons regarding whether one should rent a forklift or simply fork out on one, and the reasons for and against are outlined herein.

Firstly, how often are you going to use the forklift? If the answer is "For a set period of time", then you may be a renter!

Renting has various immediate benefits, especially for an expanding small business:

The capital that is sactataga chill rificed in the permanent ownership of equipment (such as forklifts) is obviously less liquid than just sitting in a business account. This considered, if your business is still expanding and requires capital 'on-demand', then renting may be for you. Renting also means that the equipment your using is likely to be new and faster-performing than (the likely case of) the "trusty" old forklift that the company has retained for years. This, therefore, translates to greater productivity when renting.

Another benefit of renting is that expenses can be claimed for the forklitembea coffee ft straight away, as it's not a balance sheet item. Again, for small businesses this non-delay in expenses payback can be crucial, and a very good reason to rent. A further benefit is that there are obviously no costs associated with both scheduled maintenance and unexpected maintenance costs associated with breakdowns.

This, along with the knowledge that all relevant Occupational Health & Safety paperwork is taken care of, can make renting a forklift a much more appealing option than purchasing.

That said, purchasing one as a company asset has mbt tembea mink its own set of advantages. For example, a company may know in advance that its use of a forklift will be quite minimal and for specific, known tasks. It could therefore be a good call to purchase a late model forklift and save on a pointlessly "high end" unit whose purpose would never be fulfilled for the (forecast) task in hand.

Another advantage of purchasing a forklift is that service costs will be minimal if the usage is low. This means that, as an asset, the forklift could deliver excellent value for money on a long-term scale without having any additional costs (at least for a long time).

Buyers of forklift trucks should note however that second-hand forklifts can let the user down when they most need them, and also (due to the nature of old stock in general) will cost more to repair/replace, due to the availability of parts for said items. Furthermore, OH&S legislation must also be complied with, and the onus is on the owner to ensure that this is the case. Therefore, owning a forklift can be a paperwork-laden task.

One should think very carefully when weighing up the dilemma of forklift ownership versus forklift rental. As outlined, there are pros and cons of each, with the nature of one's business and prospective forklift usage being the real determiner as to which approach one ought to take.
