What Is the Role of a Maintenance Manager?

Maintenance departments vary considerably from company to company, based on the individual requirements. A Manager at one plant may have a vastly different role to another Maintenance Manager at a different plant. However, their overall effect should be the same. Maintenance departments are busy places. Parts need to be ordered, delivered and stored correctly. Jobs need to be analyzed, prioritized and then scheduled accordingly. On top of this comes the design modifications, reliability engmbt pia shoes ineering and the list goes on.

A Maintenance Manager's responsibility is to take control of everything that goes on in the department, and make it work. The easiest way to do this is to look at things from a bird's eye perspective. Maintenance Managers don't need to know the exact way to assemble a particular machine, but a rough mechanical knowledge goes a long way. Maintenance Managers tend to have a lot of dealings with budgeting, controlling spending and organizing reports. Some will have extensive dealing with reliability analysis, but this does depend on their experience and employment requirements.

Usually a Manager works alongside a production, engineering and reliability department. There is a significant amount of time spend in communicating across these departments, to ensure that the needs of each department are met. In smaller companies, the manager will be asked to mbt panda do designs and modifications to equipment to make them more reliable, economical and to produce better product. However, once a business becomes reasonably large, it is simply not feasible to have the maintenance manager doing so much work.

A Maintenance Manager will usually have supervisors, planners and then trades underneath them. Their job is to ensure that the maintenance takes place correctly, efficiently, safely and that downtime is minimized. Maintenance Planners often receive a large amount of direction from their managers, to prioritize work, organize parts and liaise with contractors.

I've mentioned downtime above, and this is sommbt staka ething that Managers strive as a long term goal to reduce. Down time is often extremely expensive, and as a result the Maintenance Manager often spends a lot of time analyzing reports of assets, labor and material expenses and designing (along with the reliability engineer) a better system for maintenance to take place (or a different design). These Managers are usually the first point of contact when something fails, and as a result often receive phone calls at any time throughout the week. They are often very busy, but the work is challenging and enjoyed by many engineers and ex tradesmen/women.
